BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Public Advocate Jumaane Williams on Monday announced his endorsement of Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou for Congress in New York’s 10th District.
Williams, a prominent progressive, is the first citywide official to weigh in on the race.
“From the beginning of her career, Yuh-Line has exemplified courage,” Williams said. “She helped defeat the Democrats who caucused with Republicans in the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC). And as a sitting state legislator, she spoke out against former Governor Cuomo’s abuses, while many remained silent. She promised to deliver state dollars for affordable and public housing — and she did, over a billion dollars total. Yuh-Line is proof progressives can get things done, and I am proud to endorse her.
“I am ready to do the work to get Yuh-Line elected, and I’m asking you to join me,” Williams said. “With the crises of gun violence, climate change and housing insecurity, our communities deserve a representative who knows how to fight and win for them — and no one does that better than Yuh-Line Niou.”
“Jumaane’s public service has inspired so many people to look at politics as a powerful force for good,” Niou said. “I am honored to earn his support in this race, and look forward to working closely with him to direct long-overdue federal public housing dollars to our communities. Our coalition has a clear message for Congress: It’s time to get money and special interests out of our politics and make government work for the people again. I look forward to fighting for our community and our values in Congress.”
