It’s a new year and, thank God, there will soon be a new president, too.
Fittingly, local artist Ian Knife is carving a tree stump in Tompkins Square Park to represent new beginnings.

“It’s a fetus in the womb about to be born,” he explained of the carving. “Birth, new life, new energy, New Amsterdam, new state of mind…life after the death of the tree.”

The stump is located in the fenced-in area next to the children’s playground by the park entrance at Avenue A and St. Mark’s Place. He said he would be finishing it up any day now.
