‘Fun-raiser’ for Theater for the New City play on Vietnam War’s local impact

There will be a Fun-raising Soiree for Nina Howes’s new play, “Room with Stars,” at Theater for the New City on Tues., April 12, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The April 12 soiree will raise funds and awareness for “Room with Stars,” to be presented by Theater for the New City, at 155 First Ave., at E. 10th Street, from June 2 through June 18.

There will be refreshments, and the cast will entertain with scenes and songs. A jam session may ensue, so come prepared! Admission is by donation at the door.

This partly autobiographical play takes place at the height of the Vietnam War on Manhattan’s Lower East Side where teenaged Samantha’s dreams of a scholarship to college are shattered when she’s expelled from high school and locked up for her anti-war activities. Her hard-working mom is no help, and her Puerto Rican boyfriend enlists.

Samantha finds an ally in her boyfriend’s fiery aunt, Angelina, a volunteer at the Catholic Worker. The playwright and the diverse, community-minded cast and crew of “Room with Stars” hope to inspire new generations to speak out against the atrocities of war and all forms of injustice.

The play will star Alice Heber Martins, Yesenia Ortiz, Jon-Paul Ruiz and Elizabeth Ruf, who is also directing, with set design by Mark Marcante, lighting design by Alex Bartenieff, costumes and props by Lytza Colón, sound by Joy Linscheid and tech by Megan Horan.

When I got out of the U.S. Navy during the “Vietnam Era” I ended up on Avenue D and also at the Third St. Men’s Shelter and Tompkins Square Park. Too bad I can’t see the play here in Vegas but could you record it and put it up on Vimeo? LOVE, JP
