C.B. 2/C.B. 3 March meetings: Bringing back Brooklyn Banks skateboard park, new Centre St. bike lane, Open Restaurants rules

Among the hot topics on local community board meeting agendas this month, Community Board 3 on March 10 will consider a proposal by the group Brooklyn Bridge Manhattan to create a park with a skateboard park under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The popular Brooklyn Banks skateboard park, which had been around since 1972, has now been closed for 10 years. Advocates fear that without strong advocacy, the Brooklyn Banks could be closed for yet another decade or more now that the span is slated for cables renovation.

Also on March 10, Community Board 2 will be discussing the new rules that are being hashed out for permanent Open Restaurants.

The week before that, on March 3, the Department of Transportation will present a proposal to C.B. 2 to install a protected bike lane on Centre Street/Cleveland Place and to upgrade the existing bike lane on Lafayette Street from Canal Street to Spring Street. Centre St. definitely needs a bike lane to close the gap and connect to the Brooklyn Bridge bike lane. Meanwhile, Cleveland Place is already very narrow — plus now there are the dining sheds in the street, too — so this will be interesting.
