Brass bands horn in on Washington Square Park

BY EVERYNIGHT CHARLEY CRESPO | Vocalists are out. Brass musicians are in. At least that is the report from Washington Square Park this past weekend, where the usual collection of singer-songwriters on acoustic guitars were drowned out by brass bands, boom boxes and skateboards.

The 15-piece Eyal Vilner Big Band attracted the biggest crowds and the best old-time dancers, as it does every Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Simultaneously, however, Flowmingos, the Sunrise Jam and the Sled Quartet were among the brass bands that also played in other parts of the park.

This was all tame compared to the young crowd that was jumping wildly to the party sounds of the Snack Time brass band by the arch the night before.
