East Village artist Mac McGill collaborated on this illustration with Arun Gupta. Everyone is getting prepared for coronavirus — even the Statue of Liberty.
Emma Lazarus’s famous poem inscribed on a bronze plaque in the statue’s pedestal, “The New Colossus,” ends with the line, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
In this reimagining, the statue holds aloft a bottle of Purell, wears a face mask and instead of cradling a tablet with the date of the Declaration of Independence, holds a box of tissues.
