Man tries to torch LES Hatzalah ambulance on Grand Street

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | From the river to the sea…to the E.M.T.? … Oy vey!

Police are looking for a man who set fire to a Lower East Side Hatzalah Emergency Medical Services ambulance. The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating.

The arson incident occurred Sat., July 6, around 11 p.m., in front of Wa Lung Kitchen restaurant, at 557 Grand St., in the middle of the low-scale commercial block between Jackson and Madison Streets, near the F.D.R. Drive.

While the suspect managed to spark a small blaze behind the emergency vehicle’s rear right wheel, the fire apparently did not get very large. The incendiary anti-Semite fled on foot.

The man is described as balding with close-cropped hair and a slim build. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, gray-colored shorts and white sneakers, with a bag slung across his chest. A surveillance video shows him sauntering down the sidewalk while toting a beverage in a brown paper bag.

Hatzalah (Hebrew for “rescue” or “relief”) refers to Orthodox Jewish volunteer emergency medical corps that operate in Jewish communities around the world.
