Exclusive: Woman fights off rapist while walking to work in Greenwich Village

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | A man tried to rape a woman right on the sidewalk as she was walking to work in the Village early Sunday morning, police said.

Cops said the victim, a 30-year-old woman from the outer boroughs, was walking on Sixth Avenue between 13th and 12th Streets, near Murray’s Bagels, around 5 a.m. when she was approached by a stranger.

The man pushed the woman up against a wall, then placed her hand on his genitals. He then placed his hand on her genitals. He choked her, police said. He forcibly removed her pants.

But the woman resisted and the man fled.

Police canvassed the area. They caught the alleged perpetrator, who was identified by the victim, a few blocks away at Fifth Avenue and Eighth Street at 5:33 a.m.

Obafemi Crosland, 28, of Jamaica, Queens, was arrested and charged with attempted rape, sex abuse, forcible touching and strangulation. Police did not immediately provide more information about him.
