BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Margaret Chin, the former Lower Manhattan city councilmember, has endorsed Carlina Rivera in the Democratic primary election for Congressional District 10.
In an e-mail message to local residents, Chin encouraged them to vote for Rivera, who was her colleague in the Council when they represented adjacent districts and worked together on various local issues, including the Soho/Noho/Chinatown upzoning.
Chin served three terms in the City Council, from 2010 through 2021.
In her message to voters, she called Rivera “the only true progressive in the race” in the Aug. 23 Democratic primary.
“Carlina and I served Lower Manhattan in [the] City Council together from 2018 to 2021,” Chin wrote. “We need Carlina in Congress because she is the only candidate with an unapologetic stance on creating, building and preserving affordable housing, and she has been an invaluable ally to the NYCHA [public housing] community. Carlina has proven herself to be both pragmatic and compassionate in her fight to find short- and long-term solutions to complex problems. She is the only true progressive in the race because she has a consistent track record of doing what is right, not what is easy.”
While Rivera and Chin saw the Soho/Noho/Chinatown rezoning as a feather in their caps, most neighborhood residents strongly opposed the scheme, arguing it would spur overdevelopment and gentrification while not delivering on its promise of creating affordable housing.
What else is new? I’m voting ABC (anyone but Carlina).
