BY THE VILLAGE SUN | The Pride March was back live and in person on Sunday. It was a virtual event last year without crowds.
Also this year, Planned Parenthood led the march, in recognition of the Supreme Court’s stunning reversal of Roe v. Wade and rolling back of federal abortion protections.
Amid the ongoing antipolice climate of the past couple of years, once again gay and lesbian police in uniform were not allowed to participate in the march.
The march kicked off at Madison Square Park, heading down Fifth Avenue and turning west onto Eighth Street and Christopher Street past the Stonewall Inn and up Seventh Avenue, past the NYC AIDS Memorial at St. Vincent’s Triangle and ending at 15th Street in Chelsea.
Also happening Sunday were related events the Pridefest street fair along Fourth Avenue between 10th and 13th Streets and along some sidestreets, plus Familyfest at Astor Plaza.
I love the Pride parade. But next year, how about taking some of the corporate sponsorship money and renting and placing portable toilets along the parade route and throughout the neighborhood around Washington Square? Please.
