BY JEFFERSON SIEGEL | Extinction Rebellion, an environmental movement calling on governments worldwide to head off impending climate disaster, is known for its civil disobedience tactics.
This month, in which Earth Day falls on the 22nd, the group has already held several rallies and marches as part of its Spring 2022 Uprising. Last Friday marchers paraded through Midtown demanding the media pay more attention to the disastrous effects of climate change. Then, on Saturday more than 100 people marched from Washington Square Park to Madison Square Park. After a line of protesters blocked traffic, 13 people were arrested.
On Monday various groups calling for an end to war, nuclear weapons and the destructive greed of oil companies joined a march from Federal Plaza to the iconic “Charging Bull” statue. There they erected two structures on Broadway, blocking traffic for an hour. Almost a dozen people were arrested.
The events in New York coincided with events in cities worldwide, including large actions in Paris and London.
The group plans to hold a daily Extinction Rebellion Festival in Washington Square Park this week from Tuesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
