Trans activists gathered in Washington Square Park on a rainy Wednesday night as part of a worldwide Transgender Day of Visibility.
That the actual visibility was not great did not matter because the speakers’ words were powerful and heartfelt and cut through the rainy mist and darkness. The rally was also punctuated at points with flurries of booming drumming.
Started in 2009, the global event is held annually on March 31. It’s meant to celebrate the strides made by people who are transgender or nonbinary, meaning their gender identity is not purely male or female.
