BY DASHIELL ALLEN | Lower Manhattan’s Laughing Man Coffee will live up to its name this April Fool’s Day, with a “hilarious” pop-up show in collaboration with StandUp New York, an Upper West Side comedy club.
The company hopes it’s hilarious, that is. If not it could cost them a lot of free coffee.
On Friday, when customers walk into the popular Tribeca cafe on Duane Street, they might be surprised to find their local baristas replaced by some of New York City’s best and funniest stand-up comedians.
After you enter the place, the comedians have 60 seconds to make you laugh. If you do, then you pay for your drink like any other morning. But if you don’t laugh, then you’ll be rewarded with a free medium-size Laughing Man coffee.
“We want to celebrate the bonds that are created by joy,” said David Steingard, Laughing Man’s co-founder. “Genuine laughter can bring strangers together and friends closer. When we make time to spread joy, we create stronger connection and a stronger community.”
The comedian baristas include Dave Temple, as seen on TruTV, and “Gotham Comedy Live”; Christine Meehan-Berg (Showtime), Jason Salmon (Comedy Central, “Funny or Die”), and Ashley Austin Morris (HBO).
The “Laugh Chamber Pop-up with Laughing Man Coffee and StandUp NY” will take place on Fri,, April 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Laughing Man Cafe, at 184 Duane St.
