Tweet alert: Parakeet at Jefferson Market Garden

To be free or not to be free…and so avoid being eaten? That was the feathery question.

A parakeet — possibly escaped or let loose from a cage — recently landed in the Jefferson Market Garden.

Members of the green oasis, at Greenwich and Sixth Aves., were concerned that the colorful and chatty bird could easily become dinner for a hungry red-tailed hawk.

A young local couple who already have a pet bird offered to take in the parakeet…and did.
