Sidewalk punch leaves man, 59, in critical condition

A man was in critical condition after being slugged in the East Village on Wednesday, police said.

According to cops, a 59-year-old man was walking northbound on First Ave. toward 12th St. just before 3 p.m. on Feb. 10, when he got into a verbal dispute with a younger man.

The stranger punched the victim in his left eye, knocking him down. The victim struck his head on the ground, rendering him semiconscious.

The attacker fled north on the avenue and then west on E. 14th St.

E.M.S. medics transported the victim in critical condition to Bellevue Hospital, where he is being treated for a fractured skill, a fractured orbital bone and swelling of the brain.

Police released a photo and video of the suspect that show him walking northbound on First Ave. after the incident. The suspect has dark hair and wore a black Under Armour shirt, a black jacket, gray sweatpants and white-and-black checkered Vans-style sneakers.
