BY THE VILLAGE SUN | One developer supported another as Steven Witkoff gave a glowing speech about Donald Trump on the Republican National Convention’s final night.
Witkoff is a familiar name on the New York real estate scene. In the Downtown area, he developed 150 Charles St. in Greenwich Village, owns numerous buildings in Soho’s Cast-Iron Historic District, and on the Lower East Side co-developed the Public Hotel, at 215 Chrystie St. (though later defaulted on its mortgage), in addition to owning other properties around Manhattan — including the iconic Woolworth and Daily News buildings — as well as in South Beach and London, among others.
In his Milwaukee remarks Thursday night, Witkoff praised Trump for comforting him after one of the developer’s sons, Andrew, died of an opioid overdose in 2011.
“President Trump is as kind and compassionate a man as I’ve ever met my lifetime,” Witkoff said.
He subsequently gave Trump his late son’s guitar, noting the former president is “a big music guy.”
The Donald prominently displayed the instrument at a property he owns in West Palm Beach, Florida, he said.
Speaking before Witkoff was his son Zach Witkoff, who works in tech, as well as for his father’s real estate company.
Regarding 150 Charles St., Jean-Louis Bourgeois, son of famed sculptress Louise Bourgeois, filed an environmental lawsuit to stop its construction on the West Village block across from his, but to no avail. As for presidential elections, Bourgeois, who died in 2022, had a favorite candidate he supported, including financially: Elizabeth Warren.
