Angie Hernandez, a playwright and early ally of CHARAS, whose members founded a Puerto Rican-led cultural and community hub in the old P.S. 64, has died at age 77. She had battled cancer.
Hernandez was the creator of “The Gifts of the Magi,” a play presented annually on Jan. 6, Three Kings Day, in the East Village.
Her son, David “Daso” Soto, a musician and community organizer, runs the Piragua Gallery on E. 10th Street.
A memorial service for Angie Hernandez will be held on Sat., July 6, at East Side Tabernacle Church, at 254 E. Second St. The service will start at 3 p.m. and be followed by a repast.
