East Village artist Mac McGill’s new illustration “I Can’t Breathe” is a commentary on the injustice — and the constant danger — that black men face living in this country.
The pen-and-ink image employs McGill’s frequent circular motif — only this time to convey the feeling of being targeted.
“All Black Men are Targets,” McGill said, “and we have to tread lightly… .”
Both George Floyd and, six years earlier, Eric Garner, told police officers, who were pinning them on the ground, that they couldn’t breathe, before they died during the arrests.
