BY THE VILLAGE SUN | A 79-year-old East Village woman who was struck by a taxi a block away from her home last month has died from her injuries, police said.
Ann Readick, who lived at 65 Second Ave., was crossing the Bowery at E. Fourth Street, heading eastbound on Sun., June 23, at 1:37 p.m., when she was hit by a 2023 Toyota Sienna minivan cab traveling northbound on the Bowery. The 22-year-old male driver remained at the scene.
E.M.S. transported Readick to Bellevue Hospital. At the time, she was listed as being in stable condition. However, she succumbed to her injuries on Mon., July 22.
The investigation is being handled by the N.Y.P.D. Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
The Bowery is too wide of a street for pedestrians to cross. It also lacks a bike lane despite its 100 foot width. New construction in the past 15 years brought so much additional foot traffic to the street, yet the NYC Department of Transportation did nothing to improve the conditions.
Our neighbor was killed half a block from the Community Board 3 District office, I hope they will speak up and advocate for making the Bowery safer for pedestrians.
