Hats off to Joe’s Pub and the Village Alliance for hosting a free concert by Ukrainian world-music quartet DakhaBrakha.
The group, from Kiev, Ukraine, will perform outdoors at the Astor Place plaza on Fri., Aug. 12, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
According to a press release from the Village Alliance, DakhaBrakha “reflect fundamental elements of sound and soul, [creating] a world of unexpected new music that ensures the inspiration of cultural and artistic liberation.”
The Ukrainian outfit call their musical style “ethno-chaos.” The name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.
Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s “astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.”
