Cheesy comeback: Roma Pizza set to open in former Famous Ray’s Pizza spot on 6th Ave.

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | In her February Comings & Goings column, Caroline Benveniste noted that, “according to an unverified rumor,” a pizzeria is opening at 465 Sixth Ave., at 11th Street, the space that most recently housed Shu Han Ju restaurant.

“This is notable,” she observed, “only because Famous Ray’s Pizza operated at that location from the 1970s until 2011. While there were/are a plethora of Ray’s Pizzas around the city, the Village location was long considered to be one of the better ones.”

Well, signage now has gone up on the storefront, and, as usual, Benveniste was right on target. The place is slated to sling slices once again, this time as Roma Pizza.

There are some Original Roma Pizzas and Roma Pizzas around town — so will this place be part of yet another pizzeria name feud, along the lines of Original Ray’s and Ray’s?

    Joe’s is my favorite.

Whichever one was established in 1985.

I caught a snap of it on Friday evening before the brown paper went up, forwarded it to my (grown) kids, who attended PS 41 across the street, back in the day.

Of course, I had been going to Famous Ray’s from back in my college days. I always considered it to be the best pizza in NYC. Now that it’s gone, have some favorites, but will see how Roma stacks up.
