BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Updated Nov. 19, 2:30 p.m.: A basement fire at 3 Sheridan Square brought firefighters racing to the location on Thursday morning.
The Fire Department was alerted of the blaze at 11:26 a.m. Twenty Fire Department vehicles with a total of 78 firefighters responded to the 18-story high-rise on W. Fourth Street between Grove and Barrow Streets.
The flames were brought under control by 11:56 a.m.
There were no injuries. One civilian refused medical attention at the scene.
A Fire Department spokesperson did not have more details on exactly where in the basement the fire was located. The building contains a Gristedes supermarket on its ground floor.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.
Local reader Ed Yutkowitz subsequently reported that he heard the fire was in the Gristedes, noting it “was quickly contained.” On Saturday, he additionally shared: “The store still smells of smoke, though the workers say it was much worse yesterday.”
The Fire Department report noted that the building is “fireproof.”
