BY THE VILLAGE SUN | The years of living “hangrily” are over.
Gourmet Garage is opening a new “specialty market” in the former Mrs. Green’s space at Hudson and Bank Streets this Fri., April 29, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for 11 a.m.
Leaving West Villagers “hangry,” the prime retail location has set empty and without a supermarket since 2016 when Mrs. Green’s vacated the space.
Meanwhile, Gourmet Garage recently lost its spot at 125 Seventh Ave. South, between W. 10th and Christopher Streets, after landlord Daniel Bensusan, who started the Blue Note in 1981, decided to add condos atop the building. The vertical expansion required new support beams to be driven through the ground-floor space, forcing the market out.

In January 2020, The Village Sun’s Michele Herman reported that Gourmet Garage would be opening on Hudson Street — but then the pandemic hit mere months later, delaying everything.
According to a press release, the new West Village Gourmet Garage store “will offer all the essentials of a good life, including high-quality, convenient and fresh foods. Shoppers will find a wide selection of fresh organic produce, ready-to-eat specialty items and flavorful, on-trend ingredients and meals.
“The newest neighborhood destination for fine foods, the West Village Gourmet Garage will help make mealtime more convenient with a large variety of chef-prepared, grab-and-go options, such as sushi, gourmet sandwiches and soups,” the release states. “Home-cooked meals will be just as easy as getting takeout, with a curated assortment of marinated meat and seafood in oven-ready tins and fresh, pre-cut vegetables.”
The market will offer a combination of leading national brands and unique store brands, fresh organic produce delivered daily, premium meats, local New York City products, artisan cheese and breads, freshly ground bulk foods, nut butters and coffee and a charcuterie section.

Partnering up with another legendary supermarket group, Gourmet Garage will also be offering the first-of-its-kind Fairway Market Coffee Bar, “serving up the fastest cup of coffee in NYC, along with teas and kombuchas on tap.”
The West Village location will offer all “in-store selections” for home delivery in two hours or less through the Gourmet Garage app.
The doors will open immediately following Friday morning’s ribbon-cutting.
There will be live entertainment at the ceremony by local favorite Off the Bar Brass. The first 50 guests will receive a free, commemorative West Village Gourmet Garage canvas bag, and giveaways will be distributed throughout the day.
In addition, in celebration of the opening, Gourmet Garage will present donations to four local organizations as recommended by West Village residents: City Harvest, The Center (the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center), Bleecker Street Playground and the New York Public Library.
On hand for the festivities will be members of the Sumas family, Gourmet Garage’s owners, including second- and third-generation grocers, plus new store associates, community leaders and representatives from the four local organizations mentioned above that will be receiving donations.
Founded in 1981 as the importer and distributor Flying Foods International, Gourmet Garage supplied top restaurants and chefs in New York and other major cities with their essential ingredients. The first Gourmet Garage retail location opened in Soho, bringing local shoppers restaurant-quality ingredients. The company now has four markets in the city. The store’s motto is “Shop like a chef!”
