Two arrested in fatal Tompkins Square shooting

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Two 63-year-olds were arrested Thursday in the July 12 broad-daylight shooting in Tompkins Square Park that left one man dead and another wounded, police said.

The two sexagenarians, Angel Sardina of 66 Pike St. on the Lower East Side and Rafael Macias, who lives in the Bronx near Van Cortlandt Park, were each charged with murder and attempted murder, both in the second degree. It’s not clear exactly where 66 Pike Street is since the Manhattan Bridge takes up the south side of the street at that spot; but across from it is 65-75 Pike St., which is part of the Rutgers Houses public housing development.

In the incident on Fri., July 12, just before 10 a.m., responding police found a 74-year-old man on the ground with a single gunshot wound to his back at the chess tables, near the East Village park’s corner at Seventh Street and Avenue A. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In addition, a 44-year-old man who was shot multiple times in the body was able to flee out of the park and stagger into a nearby deli, where responding medics aided him and transported him to Bellevue Hospital. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.

Police are not releasing the slain man’s identity to the media yet pending proper notification of his family — which could mean they have been unable to track down his family members or he might not have had ID on him.

A police spokesperson said, at this point, the press department does not have any additional information to share about the motive behind the shootings, the relationships between the individuals or any other details.

Three old guys blasting it out, probably over a few dollars. Remember when it was young gangstas being blamed? Is history repeating itself as a farce? Should the cops should go medieval on these old farts.
