Shining a light for justice, on the Bowery

Updated June 15, 5 p.m.: In support of the George Floyd protests and the struggle for racial equality, the citizenM hotel kept some of its lights on overnight Tuesday to spell out the initials “BLM,” for Black Lives Matters.

Back in early April, during the onset of the coronavirus crisis in New York City, the 21-story hotel, on Bowery between Delancey and Spring Sts., left some lights on to form a heart, to show love for frontline healthcare workers and first responders.

The hotel has been open during the pandemic, though with a low volume of guests. It is only open to guests staying at the hotel; it is not open to the public.

Sam Riehl, a spokesperson, explained, “The hotel has been open to staying guests only, but due to lower occupancy, citizenM has been able to create the light shows.”

Correction: The citizenM hotel is currently open for staying guests only. The Village Sun previously said that the hotel was closed. We apologize to citizenM hotel for the error.
