Not a red herring but a green Haring returns to Astor Place

After more than a year and a half in the shop, the Keith Haring sculpture “Self Portrait” was back outside 51 Astor Place, at Third Avenue, on Monday — albeit still wrapped in protective plastic.

Looking a bit like a round-headed Gumby, the piece was created in 1989. It was installed at the East Village spot in 2014. The public artwork was then removed in September 2020 “for minor conservation work,” which was expected to be slow going due to the pandemic, EV Grieve reported at the time.
