Man found dead in wheelchair near Greenwich Village AIDS memorial

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | A man was found dead on the street Thursday in Greenwich Village.

The Citizen app posted a video clip on the afternoon of Sept. 21 showing a group of detectives standing near a man’s body lying on the sidewalk covered by a white sheet, with a wheelchair beside him, near the southwest corner of 12th Street and Seventh Avenue South. The spot is just outside the NYC AIDS Memorial Park at St. Vincent’s Triangle and right across the street from the Lenox Health Greenwich Village health complex.

A police spokesperson said officers responded to the location a few minutes before 9 a.m. and found an unconscious and unidentified male in a wheelchair. E.M.S. medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The Citizen app post was titled “Crime Scene Established” but police did not indicate that there was any criminality involved. There was no additional information immediately available from police about the man.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
