BY THE VILLAGE SUN | A Greenwich Village rooftop burst into flames just east of Sheridan Square on Sunday evening.
According to a Fire Department spokesperson, the blaze, at 147 Waverly Place — at Gay Street and Sixth Avenue — was reported at 11:11 p.m. Twenty Fire vehicles with 78 firefighters responded to the 13-story building. The hot roof was deemed under control by two minutes before midnight.
There were no injuries reported.
The fire’s cause is under investigation. It wasn’t immediately clear if a penthouse outdoor fireplace was to blame.
According to Compass, a real estate brokerage, the 20-condo building boasts a “one-of-a-kind penthouse residence includ[ing] a private terrace, outdoor fireplace, hot tub and indoor wood-burning fireplace along with seven exposures.”
