BY THE VILLAGE SUN | GoFundMe is sponsoring a free giveaway — both eats and merch — at Ray’s Candy Store.
The fundraising platform recently sent out an invitation for the event, set for Sun., Dec. 10, from noon to 2 p.m., at the iconic egg cream shop, at 113 Avenue A, at Seventh Street.
“Hey NYC community, we’re hosting a free event at Ray’s Candy Store to thank you for your generosity!” the e-vite said. “Your community showed up on GoFundMe to help this local business thrive, and we’re celebrating your kindness.
“Stop by for a polaroid photo, a free hat* and free fried Oreos!
(*One per person, while supplies last.)”
Ray Alvarez has been running the counter at his beloved candy shop for 50 years. In late 2022, a patron started a GoFundMe to help celebrate Alvarez’s 90th birthday and collect some extra money to pay the store’s bills. More than 2,400 generous donors pitched in, raising $50,000.
