Arrest in attempted sexual assaults in Greenwich Village / Union Square

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Police said they have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with two attempted sexual assaults in the Greenwich Village / Union Square area on the morning of Sun., Dec. 31.

Christopher Marrero, 23, of the Bronx was arrested Thurs., Jan. 4, at 9:45 a.m. at Chinatown’s Fifth Precinct.

He was charged with one count of sexual abuse, two counts of attempted sexual abuse, one count of attempted rape, three counts of unlawful imprisonment and two counts of stalking.

Police say that, first, around 10 a.m., he grabbed a 21-year-old woman on the sidewalk at 16th Street and Fifth Avenue and tried to drag her to a secluded area, but she got away. A couple of hours later, he allegedly followed a different woman, age 24, into a bathroom and tried to remove her clothes, but she also managed to flee to safety.
