This past weekend, the Whitney Museum of American Art launched two new free-admission programs, Second Sundays and Free Friday Nights, to reduce barriers to entry to the museum and connect more New Yorkers to art and culture.
The Second Sundays program offers free all-day admission and special programming in English and Spanish for visitors of all ages on the second Sunday of every month.
As of 3 p.m. last Sunday, 10,000 tickets had been reserved for Second Sundays. The program kicked off with remarks from Scott Rothkopf, the museum’s new Alice Pratt Brown director, and Laurie Cumbo, the commissioner of the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
The start of Second Sundays followed last Friday’s launch of Free Friday Nights, which will happen every Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Along with special programming, Friday evenings at the museum now will also offer music, deejays and dancing, or as one museum official put it, “more of a party atmosphere.”
According to the museum, “The Whitney’s Free Friday Nights are an ideal destination for happy hours and date nights and will play a larger role in the evening energy of the Meatpacking District.”
Free Friday Nights are made possible by three-year gifts from Whitney Trustee Jen Rubio and Stewart Butterfield, and Whitney Trustee Paul Arnhold and Wes Gordon.
The Whitney Museum is located at 99 Gansevoort St., between Washington Street and 10th Avenue. For more about Second Sundays and Free Friday Nights at the Whitney, click here.
