Gunshots fired in Union Square headphones robbery

BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Bullets flew at the northern end of Union Square during a robbery, police said.

According to cops, on Fri., Dec. 8, around 9:40 p.m., a 20-year-old was walking on the sidewalk at Union Square West and 17th Street, when he was approached by three males he did not know. Working together, the trio stole the man’s over-ear headphones from off the top of his head.

The victim, though, followed behind the robbers, one of whom brandished a handgun and fired it toward him. The thieves then fled into the Union Square subway station.

There were no injuries reported.

The value of the stolen headphones is about $550.

Apparently several shots were fired. Later on Friday night, as crime-scene investigators searched for evidence, two markers could be seen on the ground, placed over bullets or shell casings.

A Twitter feed that monitors police activity reported that one of the alleged suspects was carrying a red backpack and possibly fled the scene on a northbound R train.
