BY THE VILLAGE SUN | So four East Village stand-up comics walk into an East Village bar… .
The Funny Neighbors Comedy Show features “the best and funniest up-and-coming stand-ups,” with one booking requirement — that they live nearby.
The new-concept show is being pitched as “the marriage of Sunday barbecues and the funniest boys and girls next door!”
Local jokesters Nate Stein, Mitchell Lippitt, Kate Franklin, Spencer Sileo and Lakshmi Kopparam will hit the stage at One and One, at 76 E. First St., at First Avenue, on Thurs., Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. (Admission $12.71, no drink minimum).
Funny Neighbors was born from an idea to book more comics based on where they live — partly to cultivate a broader sense of community, partly to determine which New York City neighborhood generates the biggest laughs. Right now, it’s the East Village’s chance to shine.
Nate Stein, the event’s organizer, is a New York City-based stand-up comedian who has lived in Colorado, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. Stein draws on these experiences to form “hilarious takes on all things politics, dating, sports and everything in between.” He also hosts a monthly show at St. Mark’s Comedy Club, co-hosts the monthly LudCap Comedy Show in Brooklyn (a “Succession”-themed comedy show) and performs regularly all over the city whenever and wherever he can. When not doing stand-up, Stein enjoys running, tequila and gambling responsibly (often in that order).
While Funny Neighbors may be a new show in a bar basement, acts like John Mulaney, Nikki Glaser and Shane Gillis all got their start doing shows like these. So — who knows? — audience members might one day be able to say, “I saw them when… .”
