BY THE VILLAGE SUN | More than 40 Turkish, Syrian and other musicians will perform at Drom in the East Village on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 in a pair of earthquake relief concerts.
The immensely destructive 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that recently hit southeastern Turkey and Syria have left more than 30,000 people dead under the rubble. The people in Turkey and Syria are in dire need of help and support from communities across the world.
In addition to musicians from Turkey and Syria, others from Tunisia, Macedonia, Armenia, Israel, Palestine, Greece and Venezuela, as well as local musicians, will also perform at the concerts at Drom, at 85 Avenue A.
One hundred percent of ticket proceeds will benefit the Turkish Philanthropy Fund and Basmeh Zeitooneh, a registered nongovernmental organization working in Syria and Turkey.
Drom was founded 15 years ago by two Turkish entrepreneurs, Serdar Ilhan and Ekmel Anda, with an emphasis on showcasing cultural diversity. “Drom” means “journey” in the Romani Gypsy language.
Doors for the relief concerts open at 5 p.m. and shows start at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50, $100, $250 and $500.
