St. John’s in the Village Church is stepping up to help seniors and other vulnerable individuals — particularly those without Internet access — get food and supplies during this trying time.
Seniors can call the Episcopal church, at 218 W. 11th St., which will order and pay for the groceries, which will then be delivered by the group Invisible Hands or store employees.
St. John’s covers the cost.
As Father Graeme Napier, the church’s pastor, explained, “A senior who wishes to pay for what they ordered may do so at the end of this shut-in period. This would help us help others. No one is obliged to pay — i.e., they can think of it either as a loan or as a gift from St John’s.
“Any vulnerable person without Internet is very warmly invited to use this phone-in service.”
Seniors can also have meals delivered by the city’s Department for the Aging. Initially, local senior centers, like Greenwich House in Greenwich Village, had started out by offering “grab and go” meals for their members to come pick up. But as the need for sheltering in place increased, that program ended and DFTA has picked up the slack.
