BY THE VILLAGE SUN | Updated June 29, 4:50 p.m.: Police say they have identified the man wanted in connection with the sexual assault and robbery of a female jogger in front of Pier 40 three months ago.
Following an investigation by detectives, cops say they are now looking for Carl Phanor, 28, who — at one point — stayed at 90 Lafayette St., at White Street, The Bowery Mission Tribeca Campus Shelter. He is described as standing around 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds.
According to police, on Sun., March 27, at 6:10 a.m., a woman, 39, was jogging northbound at Clarkson and West Streets in front of Pier 40 when she was approached by a man on a bicycle.
The stranger pushed her to the ground and began to choke her. He then forced her to perform oral sex on him and stole her cell phone, then fled on his bike, according to cops.
E.M.S. transported the victim, who suffered bruising and pain, to the hospital for evaluation.
After this article’s publication, a spokesperson for The Bowery Mission reached out to The Village Sun, saying, “Our records show that the gentleman in question stayed with us for one night in January 2016 under a slightly different name.”
Asked to clarify if the suspect resided at the shelter at the time of the March attack, a police spokesperson said the information was provided by detectives working the case and was the suspect’s last known address.
