BY THE VILLAGE SUN | You may have read about these writers and their latest books in The Village Sun. Now you have a chance to see them reading from them in person.
“Three Village Voices,” Kate Walter, Donna Florio and Michele Herman will be reading at the Westbeth Community Room, at 155 Bank St., on Wed., May 4, at 7 p.m.
Walter’s autobiographical book of essays, “Behind the Mask,” chronicles her experience living at Westbeth Artists Housing as a single woman during the COVID lockdown and how she grappled with pandemic issues, especially the loss of in-person social activities. Herman interviewed Walter about the book in an insightful profile in The Village Sun last November.
Florio’s autobiographical “Growing Up Bank Street” recalls her early days in then-still-bohemian Greenwich Village. Liz Thomson penned a beautifully written review of the book for The Village Sun last March.
Herman’s novel “Save the Village” reflects on the changes Greenwich Village has gone through and the artists and preservationists who, despite it all, are still here fighting the good fight.
“ “Save the Village” is the kind of love letter the world’s most famous neighborhood deserves, written with the intimate detail and wry affection only a loving insider could conjure,” John Strausbaugh, author of “The Village,” said.
“I’m really excited about this evening of writers,” Walter said. “I thought it would be fun to organize a reading with three authors with new books that take place in the Village. Both Michele and Donna were really supportive to me when my book came out a few months ago, so I wanted to do an event with the three of us.
“I’m lucky that, as a resident of Westbeth, the community room is available for artistic events,” Walter continued. “The other good news is that, as of this writing, the room limits have been lifted, so we can fill the room to capacity. I’m grateful to the Literary Arts Committee of the Westbeth Artists Residents Council for sponsoring this evening.”
