Updated March 19, 6:00 a.m.: Wednesday afternoon, City Council Corey Johnson publicly announced that he had been exposed to coronavirus.
“Today I learned that I was exposed to COVID-19,” he said in a statement. “After speaking with medical professionals, I immediately got tested for COVID and am awaiting the results. I have begun quarantining, per [Centers for Disease Control] guidance. Going forward, I will continue following C.D.C. guidelines.
“Fortunately, I have no symptoms and I’m feeling great,” Johnson reported. “I already have received my first vaccine shot, and am excited to get the second dose soon. I will continue my City Council work from home in the coming days.
“Please continue to wear a mask,” he urged everyone, “wash your hands and get vaccinated if you’re eligible.”
Johnson subsequently announced his test results came back negative.
After bailing out of the mayoral race in September, Johnson last month announced that he was running for city comptroller.
It was not immediately clear when, where and how the Council speaker was exposed to COVID. Last Friday, according to his Twitter feed, he was on the campaign trail in the Bronx, supporting Vanessa Gibson’s run for borough president.
