The Public Theater is wrapping up a more than monthlong light-projection installation highlighting the deaths of black Americans at the hands of police.
For the public art display, entitled “Say Their Names,” the theater, at 425 Lafayette St., converted its facade into a blank canvas onto which more than 2,100 names of victims of police violence were projected.
Curated by Garlia Cornelia Jones and designed by Lucy Mackinnon, the installation covered the entire front of the landmark building. It featured work by 10 visual artists from varying mediums, including “From Ferguson to Baltimore,” by Dáreece Walker and “Pietà,” by Tylonn J. Sawyer.
All of the artists’ pieces responded to one single prompt:
For centuries, the murders of Black Americans have been overlooked, covered up and disregarded.
We invite you to remember.
We invite you to honor.
We invite you to Say Their Names.
The project featured a 24-hour live stream. The installation concluded on Sun., Dec. 6.
