If there’s a going-out-of-business sale, you might be able to get some discounts on vitamins at The Vitamin Shoppe at Astor Place and Broadway. The place is set to close Sat., May 20.
Soho activist Carl Rosenstein — who formerly ran the Puffin Room gallery on Broome Street — was sad to learn the news. He was a regular customer of the chain store, whose name is quaintly partially spelled in Middle English style.
“I shopped there 25 years,” he said. “This was the last Downtown location. There was one on 14th and First Avenue and on Union Sq. Both closed.
“The store manager told me the owner demanded a steep [rent] increase. Really too bad. They have great products and well priced.
“Now there is only Whole Foods, and I hate making Bezos richer,” he lamented. “The closest is Sixth Avenue and 23rd Street. Not convenient for me.”
Greedy greedy landlords.
