Tenement buildings have figured prominently in the work of East Village artist Mac McGill. During the 1980s and ’90s, the buildings he drew were formerly abandoned, home to self-sufficient DIY squatters who renovated them and brought them back to life. Now, though, amid the coronavirus pandemic, buildings are taking on a whole new meaning and role as we — at least those of us who can — stay at home and “shelter in place,” but for who knows exactly how long?
