Woman attacked by panhandler on Lower East Side

A stranger asked a middle-aged woman for money on the Lower East Side, then struck her, police said.

Cops said that on Thurs., May 6, at 8:20 a.m. at the corner of Canal and Essex Sts., an unidentified man approached a 57-year-old woman, demanded cash and began to punch her in her head.

The victim fell, suffering injuries to her teeth and a laceration, bruising and swelling to her head. She was not hospitalized due to the attack.

Police termed it an attempted robbery, so apparently the thug did not actually take any of the victim’s property.

Police provided surveillance-camera video of the alleged suspect.

Police ask that anyone with information call the N.Y.P.D.’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted on the Crime Stoppers Web site at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or on Twitter at @NYPDTips. All tips are strictly confidential.

This is why I always put a few single dollar bills in my pocket before I leave my apartment. I give one to whomever asks and have never had a problem. They usually say “Thank you” or “God bless you”. Worth it.
