The nearly 100-year-old Eisenberg’s lunch counter, at Fifth Ave. and 22nd St., has closed. A “For Rent” sign hangs in the window of the place, which was famed for its matzo ball soup, egg creams and old-school diner decor.
Warren Chiu bought the Flatiron eatery in 2018, with a pledge not to change the menu. According to Grub Street, he had not paid rent since before the start of the pandemic one year ago.
Chiu, whose father founded Warwick Hotels, is said to have “moved the menu” to an Eisenberg’s he opened in San Francisco’s Warwick International Hotel.
How sad. Best (and cheapest) pastrami in town.
