Mermaid Parade makes waves on Avenue B

Nothing’s been the same this summer, so why would the Coney Island Mermaid Parade be any different?

There was no mass gathering of thousands of mermaids and mermen on the Brooklyn boardwalk this past weekend. But a group of folks who participate in the annual extravaganza gathered at Avenue B and 10th St. on Sunday for a local version.

They strutted along the avenue modeling their costumes. Along with seashells and starfish, tallboys were also a popular accessory.

This year, the Mermaid Parade’s organizers encouraged revelers to participate in a “Tail-a-Thon.” The idea was for a decentralized event that could be joined by anyone from anywhere — homes, parks, sidewalks — around the globe.

A tech team then cobbled together the video streams, along with the parade emcees, special guests and prerecorded content, into a multi-hour broadcast.
